In my article on better gouty arthritis treatment I focus on the new rheumatologists guidelines for acute gout management.

The second guideline states:

Fast-acting oral NSAIDs at maximum doses are the drugs of choice when there are no contraindications (A).

Which I have paraphrased for gout patients as:

Maximum doses of fast-acting oral NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) are the best if you can tolerate them(A)

I agree with this, though I was initially given ibuprofen interspersed with paracetamol, and that also did the trick. Other guidelines also talk about supporting or replacing NSAIDs with other drugs. This again emphasizes the weakness of the guidelines as a comprehensive procedure for advising patients about gout pain management, though this might be addressed in the full guidelines (my article is based on an executive summary).

What was your first advice for choice of gout pain relief? Did you use NSAIDs? Did you take them, or did they give you problems? Please share your experience here, or ask a question if you don’t understand what I’ve said.

The guidelines mught make more sense if you study my Acute Gout Management diagram.

I have had gout attacks periodicly for about 5 years .I also have had Fibromyalgia  for most of my adult life. I have seen many MDs that tried different Nsaids to reduce my Fibromyalgia to no effect. So i had accumulated a drawer full of different types of Nsaids. I know this is stupid! Anyway when I have had the gout attacks I would see the Dr and get the same old advice and then I would try a different Nsaid per each attack. I have just had an acute attack of Gout and I decided to try different nsaid that was prescribed for the Fibromyalgia. This time it was Clinoril (Sulindac).Literally overnite my pain and swelling was radically reduced!!! This rxhad no effect on my Fibromyalgia but was like magic for me.Maybe its just my metabolism but I hope this can help others with Gout attacks.
