A question for the Colchicine guru's

Saturday morning I woke up with slight foot pain on the top of my big toe (not the bunion area). It wasn't excruciating, but was a tad bit uncomfortable when walking. Well I took 6 Colchicine before the pain went away (I'm also on 300mg of AP). At dose 6 I also began soaking my foot in hot water and took some Alleve as well. My question is, should I have done the hot water/Alleve thing first? I certainly don't want to abuse Colchicine. I did have about 4 beers the night before so would this pain have been from new crystals forming? There have been other times when I've had much more than that and been perfectly fine.Would this have most likely tunred into a full-blown attack if left untreated? Also, I tested my UA that morning and it was 4.0. So again, I guess I'm wondering when to begin Colchicine, and when to ride out the slight pain? This will be the 3rd time in 6 months I've taken the drug. It appears dose 6 is my magic number.

Hi cjeezy,

I stopped taking Colchicine 2 months back. I do get the pain on the top of the toe many times but it has never alarmed me to the extent of tkaing Colchicine.

Once about 3 weeks back, I did get almost alrarming pain when I got up around 3 am and found I had some pain in the right big toe. On that night, for a change, I did not wear the special sleeve that I wear before I sleep. I almost thought of taking Colchicine but then decided to test it as otherwise it would always remain a suspense if it was going to cause gout attack or not.

Next day, it disappeared when I got up…So, I guess it was something else. In my case there was no obvious reason for it.

It is difficult to decide as if it gets into full blown attack, you would curse yourself why you did not take the Colchicine at first place. And if it did not, you would not be able to say for sure if it was going to become gout attack and if Colchicine use was appropriate…though I donot think it was abuse in your case.

Hey Utube. The pain only bothered me when I walked or stretched the toe. I guess I was being a little proactive since the pain started when I woke up. If it would have come during the day, I probably would have let it go.
