In your list of foods high in uric acid theobromine tops the list. My research shows cacao as the culprit. My question is : is it possible that cacao is one of the “secret” ingredients in Angostura bitters? I'm sure that alcohol is not a good beverage for my husband but he drinks Manhattans and always adds bitters. I am suspecting they have theobromine. How can I find out?

Theobromine is only at the top of the list because the table shows the total for 100 grams. To put this in perspective, you would need to eat 7 kg (over 17 pounds) of high cocoa solids chocolate to get 100g of theobromine. 70kg of normal confectionery chocolate. I mention chocolate because this is the most common source of theobromine. It may well occur in tiny amounts elsewhere.

We can be quite certain that cacao is not a major ingredient of Angostura Bitters. Even if there is a trace of it amongst the secret ingredients, the stuff is 45% alcohol. You would be dead from alcohol poisoning before you got anywhere near any measurable nutritional content.

Stop looking for dietary scapegoats, and start considering medical facts. Let’s start with height, weight, and last three uric acid readings. Then we can create a plan that leads to freedom from gout pain.
