Bear, I've looked for that cartoon, but no luck yet.
It was an old Gent, monocled and in tweeds, in a bath chair- never seen anywhere now. [A sort of wicker pushchair withan extended front for the leg].
He's being pushed along the promenade by an absolute DOLLY home nurse with a very frilly skirt , blowing up in the sea breeze.
In one hand he has a HUGE glass of brandy amd the other a Gigantic cigar on the go.
Bit like a 'mini Titanic' under way really…
He's very red in the face and beating the absolute sh*t out of his heavily bandaged foot [about 12" across] with a cane – completely missing the point that it's not his foots' fault – ONE BIT .
PS:I just hope he got the chance to redress the karmic balance of his bad 'luck' later- when he could simultaneously reduce hiis Zinc levels and maybe adjust the Nurses' Ph a touch ;)
The humour was inescapable- but also the pathos. Brilliant !
Happy dreams….

I would have thought that my reference to Grandma in Giles would have indicated that I know what a “bath-chair” is ….. what the hell , you think I live in the woods or something …..OPPS !
I do live in the woods ….
I wonder if gout increases your sense of humour, almost every post here has some sort of “comment” included …. maybe caused by swelling of the funny bone ….

When Gout was invented a sense of humour was built in -as a viral security to maintain new users being produced!
No one dies laughing..
Bear in mind also- that young people [under 40] may need advice on traditional artifacts

Bearhunter, you do know that Naproxen doesn't do anything for gout, just works on the pain/inflammation caused by it. Get Aleve instead. It's cheaper.

I almost made a liar out of you. You puttin' near killed me.
My predicament is that hardly any one in these United States of America understands my warped sense of German humor.

Yes Hans, I know they like irony over there, but don't do it much.
With your Anglo Saxon heritage you will be up for some nonsense here from time to time.
I know GP likes to have some levity in amongst all the angst we suffer, time to time!

Hans , ignoring the insinuation that germans have a sense of humour …..
you mentioned naproxen/aleve, that is what i use and I was about to ask here about what does aleve do exactly
I understand from your comment that it
1) relieves the pain some what
2) reduces the swelling
so is it fair to assume that in a mild attack, with Aleve working reasonably well, if you continue to work, move etc that you will not be doing any excessive damage to the joint in question/pain
OR during any attack that you should strive to rest the particular joint as much as possible
I hope that makes sense, I actually told my kids once adter doing something stupid that I had a gout attack in my brain ! ( yikes ! is that even possible ? )

Irony over where???
I got more Saxon heritage than Anglo. Wouldn't be surprised though, if there wasn't some Roman-French heritage tucked away in my points (and I don't mean the ones you suck on.)
What do ya mean “angst”? We ain't gotten any angst. We are fearless sufferers and even face our enemies, the docs, the pharmies, the government without blinking an eye when we go across the borders to get our meds any place else except here (the States).

Aleve has never alleviated any pain due to gout for me. It is the only OTC 'pain medication' that I can take, though. I seem to need big doses of certain drugs to garner any benefit from them. I can easily pop 2 or 3 Vicodins or Percocets and hardly feel a thing whereas my wife takes 1/4 of a pill and goes loopy. I was given a perscription for 120 mg Arcoxia pills and was guaranteed that they would help with the constant pain I was (and still am) in. Nothing. Nada. Zip. It's a bit of a bummer. Alcohol used to be something I'd turn to in order to get some relief, take my mind off things and to put a smile on my face. Yeah, bad idea considering that whole gout-beer connection. Aargghhhh…………..

NateA, that's the problem with ALL medications.
In my case, 2 Naproxene = Aleve (AM/PM) plus 2 Colchicines worked (generally) w/i a couple of hours on my pain.

Alleve is the trade name for Sodium Naproxin… Aren't they the same, except Alleve is non-prescription strength?

Yes , Aleve is sodium naproxen , but for me it is next to miracle drug. It really helps me fend off my attacks.
Having said that , next week I take it to the next level and go to see a “rhumy”, I just hope that he doesn't accuse me of wasting his time because I still am under the distinct impression that in the leauge of gout sufferers are I am still in the amateurs, a place I am happy to stay I might add.
I do however want to stay ahead of the curve and not be hobbeling around in 10 years wishing I had taken it more seriously.
This forum has definitely helped me understand that this is a war of attrition that can easily be lost.
So I will let you guys know what a Toronto doctors ideas are for this common affliction we share.
Hey, we discovered insulin… maybe we can come up with something for gout !

Bear , with your history of 5 day attacks and 15 years in, I wouldn't put you in the starter class.
Good luck with your medic and if you want to easily maintain an active lifestyle in arctic conditions- a UA reducing med would be well worth a try, even tough you don't run to it as a natural cure.
If you find this route difficult with attacks triggered- pulling you down too far, that would be another thing again.
With a specialist on your case , you will hopefully get the right support on this.
