Is this artice just a plug for Taube's Good Calories, Bad Calories. It looks extremely well researched at first sight, but digging deeper, I'm not convinced that it isn't just another ploy to sell books.

The link with sucrose seems solid. I've read about it before -and as someone with Gout, Hi BP, high triglycerides, SUA and Chlorestrol, don't need a lot of persuading to take an even harder look at the role of Sucrose in my diet. I use very little sucrose anyway (2 lbs p.a,.? raw) and am prepared to keep consumption of fructose to the form of high fibre fruit sources as much as possible.

Fortunately, Blueberries (lowish sugar, for a fruit)) are widely promulgated as healthy nowadays and are freely available. Cherries for gout seem to be most effective when sharp rather than sugar laden. I avoid the syrup ,mostly.

I don't think the grapes in wine would be a problem- after all the sugars are turned into alcohol.

The effect on liver and kidneys may not be welcome, or helpful with gouties, but reports have been made that show a lesser efect than Beer or Spirits- must stay cheerful !!

Just think of the immense profits made on the selling of junk food, sweets and pop !

Cheers…

Taubes and Weil are both complete and utter charlatans and the only reason they are heard from is that one cannot lock up people who spout nonsense. They, like Donald Duck, prove however that quackery can be very profitable

(Taubes claimed high fat diets are good for you AND that exercise is bad becasue it increases your appetite.)

The “Insulin causes all disease” crowd is as bad as the “Vitamin C by the shovelful CURES all diseases” crowd. Simpleminded nonsense to sell paperbacks.

Personally, I eat very little sugar, never have, and I have had gout for a LONG time. I have had ONE non-diet soda in the last 10 years, by ACCCIDENT and I have not bought a bag of sugar since I moved into this apartment 22 years ago.

An aside,

If Taubes claims to be an expert on the subject, you'd think that he, Weil or one of his proofreaders would spell allopurinol correctly in a published paper?

A recent study has highlighted the role of a specific triglyceride in heart disease- bypassing the usual well known HDL/LDL argument. If you don't look- you don't find!

The article ref. above I found useful as it goes over ground that has been neglected and counteracts fashionable trends in research.

Leptins are an important  fat based component necessary for good health and appetite balance- yet fat intake is demonised routinely.

A recent study further commented that being overweight and older isn't as dangerous to health as first thought.

Sorry- no links. With everything so buried in medical, media and culture constructs -it's hard to focus on the essentials sometimes!

I think Zip is overreacting somewhat to the drift of the argument -which seems well made to me.

When you think of the money made from sweets and pop- total JUNK in food content , it would be foolish to underestimate the potential for spin, in a myriad ways, to keep sales high.

The one thing that didn't come clear- was why gout lost its' almost 'epidemic status' long before the 60's and AlloP intro.

Maybe WW2 had an effect as sugar was very hard to get for years and people also ate a very basic & rough diet and were never healthier.

Mmmm….

Edit:

Full marks for a suger free diet Zip- this alternative has a bad image already

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..bw1sT5fL8U  -at the end the guy says nobody makes money from curing illness- just treating it! Goes for a lot of conditions…

Gout is a metabolic illness- is there a pill for 'metabolic balance'?
