I did do a search and it does look like some other people have experienced gout in the neck.  I periodically get a very sore neck that progressively gets worse over time.  It's not the type of soreness or pain that can be rubbed out or fixed with a massage – i.e. – not muscle related.  However, the pain doesn't feel like gout pain either.  No swelling, no redness, no warmth.  Could it be gout related, though?  It happens frequently enough that is has me wondering.  No injury or trauma is ever involved and it happens whether I'm stressed or happy or whether I'm tired or rested.  It doesn't matter.  It just comes out of nowhere and usually leaves me pretty miserable for at least five or six days.

Has anyone else ever experienced this and thought it was gout?  I know that there isn't much I can do for it beyond the regular regime.  It may not be as painful as an ankle or a knee being affected, but boy does it cause discomfort and some miserable headaches.  Good sleep goes right out the window too.

Alright, back to the couch and keeping as still as I can…………

Ouch! -But the spine [where pain would issue from] is better buried than in the lower joints for surface shows.

If it is gout – it would imply a circulatory problem , maybe?

I do get headaches increase with gout flares- in fact daily, so it's not out of the question.

A blood test for Serum UA level would help pin this one down.

Nate,

I'm gonna venture a guess as NOT GOUT. The neck is pretty warm with a furious blood supply so although I'll admit the possibility but not the likelihood.

All my neck pains come from nerve impingement either from looking too long at the computer monitor that is off center, hence looking either left or right, or too vigorous stretching also I have some considerable arthritic processes and squashed discs in my aging neck…like most people my age I guess.

If there is any radiation towards the shoulder or arm then you can be SURE it's a cervical nerve.

I've got a doc appointment tomorrow and will mention it to him.  I will be getting my UA level checked agaiin tomorrow too.  It's been sitting between 4.0 and 4.8 for the last few months.  600mg/day of Allopurinol will do that!  I'm hoping I can lower that a bit soon.  I think it's starting to affect my stomach a little.

Zip – I don't think this has anything do to with a pinched nerve or nerve damage.  I have had some problems in the past with my sciatic nerve, but not much else to speak of on the nerve front.  That was mainly surfing related.  I'm not doing much of that in Germany!

thanks for the replies guys.  I'll report back on what the doc and I talk about.  Actually, I did complain to him about neck pain maybe six months ago.  Just remembered that.  He gave me a couple of shots in my neck and the pain was gone quickly.  I think it was cortisone and an antiinflamitory shot.  May have to do the same tomorrow.
