is a partially swollen big toe, without pain, possibly the beginning of gout?

It is possible that it is gout, though it could be something else.

Gout pain is a complex series of processes, and the irritation of uric acid crystals does not always lead to pain. I have noticed swelling without pain in several joints, though usually they are painful.

I've mentioned on many occasions that the only way to be certain of (or to rule out) gout is to analyze fluid from the affected joint. Search for arthrocentesis in the search box on the right for more details
