You cannot take allopurinol “on and off”. You must take it every day.
If you do not, you will suffer much more gout pain.
It is very important to have regular blood tests to make sure that the allopurinol dose is correct for you to lower your uric acid. If your doctor has not advised you of this, he does not understand gout and you must see a rheumatologist.
Do not mess around with allopurinol. If it is administered properly, and monitored regularly, it eventually takes all your gout pain away. If it is not taken properly, then not only is it a complete waste of time, but it can cause you more gout pain as your uric acid level shoots up and down.
