i have been diagnosed with gout and severe arthritis.  I have been injected with cortiz0ne and really got no relief.  I also have one functioning kidney and it is not at 100%  I am on colchicine and allopurinol and am getting no relief.  My hands are both full of crystals and my wrists are now hurting.  I also was told i have gout in my feet which makes it difficult for me to walk.  My hands hurt all the time and i am not able to do much with them.  I am trying to avoid foods high in purine and think i am doing ok.  I have also tried taking Flamasil which has not helped at all.  I am hoping you can come up with some suggestions i am open to anything that will help.

If you are taking allopurinol, it is vital that it is monitored properly. This is always best done by a rheumatologist, especially when you have complications like impaired kidney function.

If the dosage is not right, you are wasting your time. Regular uric acid tests are a must.

This won't help with the pain straight away, but you should be pain free in a few months if you take allopurinol every day.

The rheumatologist should be able to recommend a more effective pain killer until the allopurinol has got rid of the uric acid.

thank you for replying so quickly.  I am under a doctors care and have been for quite a few month.  I take a blood test every month to check my uric acid and it remains high.  I have been on allopurinol for months and it is not helping.  Other pain meds have been tried but cannot take for too long due to kidney problem.  I think i am beginning to realize that there is not much that can be done to alleviate the pain and crystals.  I guess i will just have to learn to live with the pain and hope it does not become worse.  I will keep  reading as much as i can about gout and hope someone can give me more answers

thank you again

This suggests to me that your allopurinol dose is not right, or you need an alternative drug for lowering uric acid. That is why it is so important to see a gout specialist, such as a rheumatologist. Most non-specialists do not seem to understand that, if uric acid levels are not coming down, both doctor and patient are wasting their time.

Have you been told to drink plenty of water?
