Lasix and Gout Introduction

This old forum topic about diuretics for gout sufferers remains relevant today. Because Lasix and other diuretics have to be managed alongside uric acid treatment. But you have to consult a medic with appropriate experience. Because we see lots of gout forum contributors who are taking the wrong mix of diuretics and uric acid treatment.

So, how do you know if Lasix is the right diuretic to match your uric acid treatment?

Firstly, you cannot get the answer online. Because your choice of diuretic is one of the shared decision-making processes that rheumatologists insist on for effective gout recovery. But you are responsible for playing your part in the patient-physician partnership. So you should learn about Lasix and how it affects your choices.

For now, read through these Lasix for gout forum posts. Then consider your options as I've explained them in the summary at the end.

    Is Benicar Bad For Gout?

Can you please tell me if Benicar 20mg could affect my gout problem.

I'm taking alloupurinol 300mg and Crestor 10mg.  I am taking indomethacin 25mg for pain which isn't helping anymore.  It seems what I've read about benicar is working against me and my gout.

HELPPPPP, I'm in alot of pain…….tony

Benicar, prescribed to lower blood pressure, is sold in two forms:

    • Standard Benicar (olmesartan) is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). The label warns of a slight risk of raised uric acid levels and potential for kidney damage. No speciic mention of gout, but drugs.com does warn that gout sufferers should use with caution.
    • Benicar HCT combines olmesartan with hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic that is often cited as a cause of gout attacks. In fact, the Benicar HCT label warns specifically “Hyperuricemia may occur or frank gout may be precipitated in certain patients receiving thiazide therapy”

Losartan is the best blood pressure medication for gout sufferers, but you must discuss the alternatives with your doctor.

    tony,

Like GoutPal implied, your best choice of BP med is probably losartan (Cozaar.) It is unique among BP meds in that it causes the excretion of uric acid. If it doesn't work well enough  alone it will work very well along with Lasix (furosemide) without raising your serum uric acid.

I use 40 mg. furosemide followed by 50 mg. losartan a couple hours later (aftfer I'm done peeing a waterfall.)

Ask your doctor to switch you from Benicar to Cozaar. They're both the same class of drug, angiotensin receptor blockers.

I JUST wish Cozaar was a more potent antihypertensive.

Before using this Benicar medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: gout, kidney disease, liver disease, lupus, severe loss of body water and minerals.
