I had the first pain on Feb 23, today is May 17, first day on allopurinol.

I thought I sprained my foot in Feb, and waited 2 months to go to the doctor and find this forum.

I would welcome any comments because I can see this high UAL is extreme, and if 300mg of Allo is enough, or if I should take 450mg for a while.

The quick history, from Feb 23-27 could not walk, foot was swollen, this is first outbreak.

From March 1st to today, walk with a limp, cannot put weight on toe joint, am walking on the outside edge of foot with a limp every day.

Today's first Allo pill, I did feel more pain in the foot and toe joint as expected.

    Thanks for any thoughts!  Mark

    Read up on Allopurinol.

There is no such thing as a fixed dose. You start with an initial dose (300mg is usual, but can be varied by your doctor to suit your individual situation). You get tested every 2 to 4 weeks, and increase dose if necessary until uric acid level stabilizes well under 6mg/dL (aim for 3 or 4).

You maintain that dose, with monthly tests at first to make sure everything is OK. If uric acid level is stable at whatever dose you have settled on, then testing can be relaxed to less frequent intervals, as advised by your doctor.

Once you have gone for 6 months without a gout flare, allopurinol dose can be carefully relaxed, but never allow level to rise above 6mg/dL.

I am a chef, too, so will be glad to post any thing that makes a positive difference.

    Any other chefs? out there?

I've just realized who you are. You could make a real difference by posting an apology for the rude message you posted under the username colo809
