I've talked to a lot of people who are on this diet recently and they swear by it.? To them, it's not a diet, but just a healthier way of eating.? It basically cuts all gluten and almost all grains out of your diet along with most unnatural sugars.? It relies primarily on deriving nutrition from meats, vegetables, and fruit.??I know some will think this is the Atkins diet, but it actually does have?many differences – which I'm not going to go in to right now.??My brother started eating Paleo three years ago and the changes in his health have been amazing.? I've noticed changes in other friends?that?follow the Paleo eating habits also.? They are hardly ever sick, have more energy, and are overall?healthier.? Many of them have lost weight and have seen a significant lowering of their blood pressure and cholesterol levels.? There is a lot of research out now, and more coming out every day, that does state that staying away from refined sugars and starches while deriving most protein needs from meat is much, much better for the human body.

    ?

Of course, I always ask how someone with a bad history of gout could eat like this.? I keep getting the same answer and have even been directed towards some studies that state that alcohol and sugars, namely high fructose corn syrup,?are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to gout.

    ?

Currently, I'm on a three month + gout-free stint.? I've only had one moderate attack in the past six months, and that was probably caused by some alcohol I drank.? I have been exercising extremely hard lately and am in better shape than I've been in years.? This last weekend, I did some Alpine?Touring in the Austrian Alps and skied to the top of a mountain.? I then skied?2,000 meters all the way to the valley floor – and it felt great!? I guess what I'm saying is,?my gout really seems to be under control.? I'm still taking 300mg/day Allopurinol (and always will).? That, along with a healthy diet and no alcohol,?are probably the biggest reasons that gout is no longer a part of my daily life.?

    ?

Now, I'm just wondering? – the paleo diet.? I've seen the benefits first hand, and I've read about the benefits and what the diet can do.? I'm just wondering if anyone with predisposition to gout has ever tried this.? Will the increased meat consumption lead to gout-related problems??

    ?

I have already cut almost all bread from my diet.? I've cut most of the processed foods (boxed meals, bagged snacks, sugary treats, etc.) from my diet.? The next step for me is to go gluten?free.? I have noticed?that I have been feeling a lot better and more energetic since?I've started to phase out some of the?crap 'food' from my life.? I've started introducing red meat back in to my diet, albeit slowly.? So far, so good.

    ?

I'd love to hear of anybody else's experiences!????

    Just found this:

    ?

“Can Excess Protein lead to more Uric Acid and Gout?

It?s true that excess uric acid can lead to gout. It?s also true that uric acid is produced from the consumption of purines and that purines are found in higher amounts in things like organ meat and sardines, but the amount of purine is minimal in other muscle meat. It?s also good to note that when you eat more protein, your kidneys will extract more uric acid in your urine to compensate. Higher amounts of uric acid is also produced when you eat more fructose and your kidneys don?t compensate this time.

In this optic, eating more protein than a standard American diet and way less fructose (found in sodas and almost all packaged products with high-fructose corn syrup) should actually reduce the uric acid load in your blood.”

Hi Nate- firstly , great to hear of your progress back to full activity. That ski slope sounds the business- though I've never tried it.

On the Paleo diet ?[good link] . I've been interested in this for a long time and, as a blood group 'O', a good candidate, apart from being a non meat eater. One reason I default to keeping fish in my otherwise veggie diet.

FWIW- I had best success with digestive problems by cutting out just modern [hybridized]?wheat , as much as possible [and using Spelt]. A recent strong anti-biotic has triggered a problem in the 'gut dept' -and I read the link data wiith interest re: the well known?promoting of friendly bacteria and use of soluble fibre, rather than the?'tough' type.

I can't remember all the pros and cons of Paleo right now, but in my mind is that it is a good diet -and one we have moved too far away from in recent times [ie: the last few hundred years, at least].

I have some printed data from earlier work -I will find and check through. No doubt tons of stuff more on line, now available.

My strong belief is that alcohol and sugars are counter gout health and taking meds to compensate for these?has a long term? 'hidden' cost.

Hi Trev!? I hope you are doing well!

I've come across a few tidbits regarding the Paleo Diet and gout.? There are a few?snippits on this site:? http://www.thepaleodiet.com/success_stories/? just do a text search for 'gout' on that page.? I also found something about how a 10 year gout sufferer was able to get off all gout meds after a time of adhering to the Paleo Diet.? I won't be quitting my Allopurinol anytime soon, but it is interesting none-the-less and something to explore in the future perhaps.

    ?

The more I read, the more I'm convinced that this diet just might be a good choice for some gout sufferers.? I can already say that not eating bread or pasta or any type of packaged food and introducing a bit of red meat over the past five days has really made a big difference in my energy levels.? I also have noticed that I'm thinking a lot more clearly.? I have felt?nary a twinge?in any joint, but it still is early.? I also just feel 'leaner'.? It's hard to explain, but I'll post updates every now and then to let others know how I'm doing.? I'll also start back with my blog (which I just haven't had time for lately!).?

    ?

I found the information regarding gut health interesting also.? I've noticed that?it has been feeling a lot better too.? Now, I just need to find a supplier of grass-fed beef here in Germany.? I tried asking at my local butcher and was just met with confused looks.? Perhaps my German butcher jargon just isn't up to snuff!? At least I know that the meat I'm getting is hormone and nitrate free.? Grass-fed is supposed to be key in the diet, however (makes sense).

    ?

The peak I skied up near Schatzberg, Austria this past Saturday.? It was a looooong ski back to the valley floor but an absolute blast!? Well, except for getting lost in the woods for 3 hours!? Cool

Any diet you are on that includes 300 mg. allopurinol* is a good gout diet. ANY diet that is ABSENT the allopurinol is a bad gout diet.

    ?

    * I use “allopurinol” to include any urate lowering drug.

    NateA,

I've been following the Paleo plan (I refuse to call it a diet; more like a life-style change) for five months and feel great. Many health issues have been corrected and I have lost 14 lbs. Only once about five years ago I briefly had a gout problem; however, recently after eating lots of beef for a week and then drinking two beers, I had a painful swollen ankle one morning. By drinking lots of water, it cleared. I will still eat beef but also more meals with fish, shrimp, chicken and lamb. I just wrote an article for a local magazine about my “Cutting Edge Eating”. Robb Wolf's book The Paleo Solution suggests drinking tequila. He says add the juice from a lime and it almost becomes a health food drink!! No grain, just the root of the agave plant. I drink that and red wine without gout problems.
