Thought I would post an update as to how the 80mg dose of Uloric is managing my gout. At last testing in mid December my SUA was 4.4 and I was finally improving after 5 months of a severe attack which took out both legs and both arms. I’m happy to report that I am now walking mostly without the support of a cain and I now have enough grip without extreme pain to pour a full bottle of orange juice. The best news of all is that I will be returning to work Monday (Tomorrow.) morning. Needless to say the last six months have put a huge hole in my savings and I look forward to making a living once again. My next SUA testing is in February and it will be interesting to see where my level is.

Without this forum I don’t think I would be doing as well as I am these days and I must say thanks to all the participants of this forum for providing your support. Smile

Great result Richard- esp. getting back to work.

Did you ever get as far as a SUA test meter?

I ask, as you progression from 'gout newb' to almost 'cured ol' timer' must be a near record. Wink

The reaction you had first time has been duplicated here before- but the slower build up seems more common, certainly for me.

Also, keeping the fluid intake high as you mentioned you neglected [like me!] is still important -if you want to keep your reliance on meds to the minimum in the future.

Thirst symptoms reduce dramatically as we get older.

My experience with [BP] meds is there is often a pay back time even if just less efficatious.

This may /may not be true of Uloric -and in any case, it is early days, but as a busy guy- you may never get to come back to follow up.

The next gouty to see your Doc will get some benefit, whatever!Cool

Hello fellow gouty’s. Smile

Thought I would report the results of my visit with the specialist today. I’m still taking 80mg of Uloric daily. My SUA number is now 5.5 which is up from the 4.4 and 4.8 of my last tests. I’m walking very well these days and have almost no joint pain. I still suffer tendon pain so my grip isn’t what it was and sometimes just signing my name is painful. The tophi on the toe is almost gone and the tophi that were on my ears are only a memory now. The specialist doesn’t seem to be very worried about the tendon pain and her comment was “so your getting there” which I take her to mean that I just need more time. She scheduled me for the next visit in May and renewed my Uloric RX at the same 80mg dose.

As concerns the increase in my SUA level, I’m afraid I have to admit that I’ve been back to eating pulled pork, grilled steak and the like so I’m sure that is why the number is higher and this rise to 5.5 shows I need to cut back on that kind of eating. I still haven’t been drinking beer but do enjoy a nice Merlot now and then.

@Trev, yes, Im still managing to get 5 to 6 liters of water in me per day and I think it is a very important but overlooked part of gout management. (I have no science to prove water intake is important but the specialist thinks dehydration was what triggered my gout attack to begin with so I’m sure good water intake can’t hurt.)
