This forum is very helpful and down right truthfull…  The advise being dispensed here reflects exactly the route I went thru in the 10 or better years of gout attacks I have painfully lived.  The diet choice to me was similar to the choice I had to make to quite smoking.  When I was a smoker, I just could not imagine one day without a cigarette in my hand.  The mear thoughts of not smoking was scary, and impacted my capacity to make the choice to stop.  The day I committed to stopping, I soon realized it was a blessing.  Shortly after I found that my fears did not materialize, and my body thanked me later.  In the case of gout, it's about the same.  It took me so long to realize that my gout situation was of my making mostly, and that by changing my diet it would just stop this pain I'm self-inflicting.

A doctor told me that diet was a possibility, so I went that way.  For sure like Goutpal says, one has to have a doctor's advise.  Once that diagnose is given by a doctor, it's time to put as many efforts as possible to change the diet.

I am grateful, even if I found this forum lately, at least to have the chance to tell someone about my experience.  This forum is not a hoax, Trev and Goutpal are keeping discussions here on the right track. At least from my experience I can say they are.

Thanks you guys.

Day 2 off the pred.  Foot's still a bit sore but it's a pleasure to walk without the cane.  BP down to 131/78.

Well, after three excellent days the pain is returning.  I can still walk but use the cane to reduce the strain of limping on both legs.  I will try 3 naproxroxen sodiums tonight, but if it's any worse in the morning it's back to predinisone.

Rhumy wants another UA test in 3 weeks before deciding on medicating.  I would have asked for pills since I'm over 7, but as I am on strong meds for high BP and high BS already I am much more open to dealing with gout through diet/lifestyle changes.  If I get another bad flareup I'll rethink things.

On the bright side my weight hit a record (recent) low this morning!  Gout pain has probably added years to my life.

Beyondken,

Is one of your BP meds a thiazide diuretic? If so you will probably want to rethink it. Thiazides are perhaps the major cause of GOUT…and I say that with full knowledge of the meaning of CAUSE.

Let us know how the 3 Aleve work (naproxen)…that's a big dose.

3 alleves work well for me if the flare is not too bad. I weigh 285 lb. so that is not as big a dose for me as it would be for the average adult. My BP med is Lotrel which is not a diuretic and Doc knows I have gout.

Well, drat.  My ankle flared up bad last evening, severe pain localized on the ankle bone, with swelling rendering the ankle imobile.  Back to 20 mg pred in the morning.  I will consider staying on it longer and tapering off more slowly this time.  Still alcohol-free and sticking to my 2500 calorie diet.

Day 3 back on pred and the ankle feels much better, swelling gone.  Will stay at 20mg for a while then taper off.

The pred works so well yesterday I was able to walk all the way around Festival Bay Mall!  If only I new when to taper off the stuff.  The pain returned in a big way the last two times I stopped.  Any advice?

Why not taper down VERY slowly…like 5 mg per week. Continue at the 20 mg. for the rest of week 1. So for about a month you will have some prednisone going on.

Prednisone (cortisone) was opriginally thought of as curing rheumatoid arthritis it was so immediately successful but first it was found that the patients could not go off it and second it was found to destroy joints, shrink adrenal glands, cause moonface, damage the immune system…and on and on.

But is really really works…and we must use it carefully and sparingly.

To put your dosage into perspective:

Prednisone is the oral tablet form of steroid most often used. Less than 7.5 mg per day is generally considered a low dose; up to 40 mg daily is a moderate dose; and more than 40-mg daily is a high dose. Occasionally, very large doses of steroids may be given for a short period of time. This treatment referred to as “pulse steroid treatment,” involves giving 1000 mg of methyl-prednisone intravenously each day for three days.

Beyondken,

Have you ever tried colchicine?

I have not tried colchicine but will keep it in mind for the next flairup, or this one if it won't end.  I did buy some black beans today though.

Black bean broth simmering on the stove right now!  Will try it with prednisone and see what happens.  PS, it sure smells good while simmering!
