Do you have gout with another disease?

Gout and heart disease is a common gout forum subject. I have been looking at some recent research which shows allopurinol can help other diseases as well as gout.

There is a lot of research in this area at the moment, and I will feature some in more details soon. For now, I am most interested in which other diseases are most associated with gout amongst my visitors.

Please vote for any that affect you, or add your own.

Here are a few snippets from current research projects:

Allopurinol And Angina:
Allopurinol seems to be a useful, inexpensive, well tolerated, and safe anti-ischaemic [improves blood supply] drug for patients with angina.

Allopurinol For Kidney and Cardiovascular Diseases:
Allopurinol decreases C-reactive protein and slows down the progression of renal disease in patients with chronic kidney disease. In addition, allopurinol reduces cardiovascular and hospitalization risk in these subjects.

Allopurinol And Heart Failure:
Patients with HF [Heart Failure] and a history of gout represent a high-risk population. Among such patients, the use of allopurinol is associated with improved outcomes

Allopurinol In Dermatology:
Off-label use is common in dermatology, and is inevitable for rare cutaneous diseases such as perforating dermatosis. Allopurinol is traditionally considered to be a drug for hyperuricemia only, but the recent demonstration of its efficacy in congestive heart failure has spurred renewed interest in its application in other clinical specialties. In dermatology, allopurinol is best known for its severe cutaneous adverse reactions. Recent genomic studies conducted in Taiwan have discovered useful HLA markers for determining the susceptibility of Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis associated with allopurinol. Allopurinol has also been used in a number of dermatologic disorders including acquired reactive perforating collagenosis, sarcoidosis, psoriasis and granulomas caused by methacrylate microspheres, silicon and tattoos. Allopurinol may express its therapeutic effects via its antioxidation or anti-inflammatory properties, or its ability to improve vascular function

Allopurinol And Diabetes:
Low-dose allopurinol can reduce severity of proteinuria [excess protein in urine - a common symptom of diabetes] after 4 months of drug administration, which is probably due to decreasing the serum level of uric acid. Thus, allopurinol can be administered as an adjuvant cost-effective therapy for patients with diabetic nephropathy.

Allopurinol And Birth Problems
In this trial we aim to answer the question whether antenatal allopurinol administration reduces hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy in neonates exposed to foetal hypoxia.

All the above are within the last two years. Some of the links to gout are tenuous, but there may well be an indirect link via uric acid. Each of these topics is good enough for it's own discussion - I am just trying to get an idea of which topics are most interesting to people at this stage, but please feel free to start your own specific discussion elsewhere in these forums, if you like.
