Gout treatments, and gout diagnosis just got easier to administer. Wilmer Sibbitt MD has invented the first improvement to syringe technology for decades. His reciprocating syringe, to be marketed under the name of Procedur, will make many gout procedures easier, faster and less painful.
The most important part of all gout treatments is confirming that you actually have gout. The best, most reliable way to confirm gout is through analysis of synovial fluid drawn from an affected joint. This process called aspiration, or arthrocentesis takes a sample of fluid, which can be analyzed under microscope for uric acid crystals. Doing this ensures that gout treatments are needed, rather than treatment for a related condition such as pseudo gout or septic arthritis.
A randomized controlled trial of the reciprocating syringe in arthrocentesis has shown that this procedure is much better with the new type of syringe. This study shows almost half the procedure time, almost double the operator satisfaction, and less than half the patient pain.
Gout Treatments
Once gout has been confirmed, or otherwise, many pseudogout and gout treatments require medications to be injected into the joints. Another study, Reduced Pain of Intraarticular Hyaluronate Injection With the Reciprocating Procedure Device has shown benefits for the new syringe when used for injections. Again, significant improvements in time taken, pain, and operator satisfaction were recorded.
