As predicted last November, the final step for febuxostat has just taken place.

Under the name Uloric, febuxostat now has FDA approval for use in the US.

Gout sufferers now have a choice of medicines to regulate uric acid production – the most vital part of gout management.

All gout sufferers should be happy to have this choice. Allopurinol intolerant gout patients must be euphoric.

I know many GoutPal visitors suffer reactions to allopurinol that make it impossible, or uncomfortable to maintain crucial uric acid lowering treatment. These are a minority of allopurinol users as most people can take allopurinol without problems. Patients with kidney problems are common in allopurinol-intolerant groups.

If you have this intolerance, please see your doctor today and discuss Uloric for your gout. If you live outside the US, febuxostat may well be approved in your country, but it might be sold as Adenuric.

GoutPal you have been a big help, I am suffering from gout as well for a while now and just had a terrible episode in my right wrist/hand. I did see my doctor about this new medicine Uloric, but he seemed to have not heard of it even when I printed it off the internet and handed the paper to him. I have another appointment on Wednesday March 4th 2009, hopefully he is up-to-date now. I really need to get this under control, its been going on for way too long.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

The trials for Uloric where extensive, and included at least 4 sites in Maryland: Frederick; Baltimore; Owings Mills; and Wheaton.

I believe the Frederick trials were done at Arthritis and Osteoporosis Center of Maryland, Frederick, MD, which according to Google maps, is about half hour from you. They are on (301) 694-5800, and have a website at http://www.aocm.org/

Please let us know how you get on – preferably in the gout forum.

It isn’t something to play around with. Your doctor prescribes it. Or better still, consult a rheumatologist.

Is it available in India? How much does it cost? Looking for your advise..

    • GoutPal says:

We are here to give advice about gout, especially to help you understand what your doctor tells you, and which questions you need to ask.

If your doctor cannot help you find Uloric, then you should try to see a rheumatologist (this link gives instructions on how to find a rheumatologist in India).

Be warned that Uloric is a new drug, and so it is expensive, so you should only try it if you have proven intlerence to allopurinol. Also remember that Uloric is the US brand name for febuxostat – it may be sold as Adenuric in India.
