Hi, I am a 37 year old Male . 5ft 3ins and 72Kilos, I have suffered from gout since June 04 after having a kidney transplant, I have had painful gout in my middle finger for three weeks now, and have tried everything, I was taking allopurinal 200mg when it flared, although the Uric Acid level was only 311, They doubled my Prednisolone to 30mg for five days, and then slowly reduced it which did nothing to reduce the swelling or pain, I am unable to bend my finger without pain, I have taken Colchichine twice a day for three weeks also, and stopped the Allopurinal, I do not know what to do now, there are lumps on either side of the finger which is restricting movement, are these Crystals? if so, how do I get rid of them?

jamie,

My biggest fear for you is that your new kidney might be underperforming…uric acid is largely removed by kidneys.

NEVER stop allopurinol because of a gout attack. Once started it is FOREVER unless a hypersensitivity reaction develops.

See your nephrologist and have him make the call because keeping  that kidney helathy is your most important issue, FAR more important than an aching finger. Are you taking any immunosuppresives?

(Did you get that kidney June 4, 2009 or June, 2004?)

In addition to Zip's advice, I would add getting the finger checked by a rheumatologist – the lumps may not be uric acid deposits.
