Hi everyone! I'm new to here, and gout for that matter. Both my father and grandfather had it so i was just waiting to get it. I'm just 29, but both of them got it young too.

I had an attack last Friday night–>doctor Sat. morning. Gave me anti-inflammatory med and did blood work. Then on Wed. i did the “urinate for 24 hours” in a jug (lol) for acm labs. That came back as “midly high” , no actual number or anything. Along with the results was a prescription for Allopurinol. Should i question this? I'm not 30 yet and don't really want to start taking pills everyday! Maybe try alternative diet and moderate drinking and such?

Very confusing stuff, some people swear by it, as others don't.  Any help would be highly appreciated!!Smile

Welcome to Gout land Laugh I was in the same boat as you.  I am relatively young too (mid 30s) and a new Gouty. Btw I have been vegetarian  for 10 years even then I ended up with Gout this year.

My advice to you is –

    a) Get joint fluid test to get proper confirmation of Gout.

    b) Your Gout is hereditary like mine so  diet won't make much difference.

    c) If Gout is confirmed then go on AlloP and ignore the nay sayers. There are a small minority who react badly to AlloP but majority don't. First few months on AlloP made me tired but eventually my body adjusted to it.

    d) AlloP will or could cause attacks initially as part of the clean up process. Stick with it.

    e) AlloP 300mg with good vegetarian diet is what I personally do.

    Lickcheeze,

I would be reluctant to go on a lifetime of allopurinol without COMPLETE assurance that I need lt. That assurance could come from a joint aspiration revealing the presence of crystals, an attack so blindingly painful in your bunion joint that it was unmistakable or several lesser attacks in the course of a year…all with corresponding high levels of serum uric acid.

What was your blood serum uric acid reading?

Has your acute attack subsided yet?

    Thanks Veggieguy and Zip!

I'm going to call doc on Tues. and ask if he can give me the actual numbers from the 1st test. And This will be day 2 with no anti-inflammatory medicine , foot feels pretty good before i goto sleep tonight, we'll see in the morning!

Here's the basics in a nutshell.

IF you are certain it is gout, then you should get on allopurinal ASAP. Getting control of gout before it has a chance to lay down deposits is the best way to treat it so it never bothers you again.

But if you are NOT certain, then hold off until you are, even if it means a couple painful bouts and the laying down of a few deposits.

Let us know your numbers cheez. I am happy the attack has subsided.

    zip2play gave the perfect answer.

I'll just add that, everything you say points to hereditary gout, and no amount of miserable diet restrictions will change your parents. 70 years of pain-free pill taking is better than 50 years of intermittent agony.

Actually, I do not have the figures to justify a 20 year drop in life expectancy from high uric acid, but I DO have some figures to show increased mortality rates. I will summarize them soon.
