Put it this way, I've never had a history of joint pain or anything like what I'm feeling now around my ankle, but the few people who have looked at it told me that it they were almost sure it was gout.

Two nights ago, I went to sleep rather late after a night of drinking with a couple friends, listening to music and pretty much just chilling outside enjoying the nice weather. I went to sleep in my normal bed, with everything normal, and the next morning I woke up with what felt like a sprained ankle. It wasn't awfully painful or anything, but it was a little awkward to walk on, giving me kind of an embarassing limp due to a degree to stiffness. Eh, it was Saturday so I figued I'd just take it kinda easy and towards the end of that night, it appeared to be almost gone – it had gotten a little annoying during the day, but not bad pain – keep in mind the thought of “gout” is far from my mind. As per usual with Saturday nights, I spent some time with the girlfriend, we drank some bourbon and chilled out, and I figured the awkward pain was gonna be 100% gone by morning.

Nope, today (Sunday) it has been bothering me all day, and I started taking it more seriously. This morning, I could barely walk without pain, and had to put an ice pack on my ankle while I sat or lay in bed. My grandfather has had a bad gout problem all his life, and so have my father and uncle – I never thought it would happen to me, though. My ankle, although not badly was swollen with a bit of a pinkish shade, and painful to touch. Upon reading about gout, I realized I am a walking target for the disease without question.

I'm a seafood lover so my diet is high in that sort of stuff, hell… I made steamed clams two times this week. I'm about 6' 250, so you could classify me easily as overweight, and of course I usually think nothing about going out and drinking usually about three nights out of the week, admittedly I drank more than usual both on Friday and Saturday.

So, the way I look at it, unfortunatley I've given myself gout – the ONLY factor that doesn't add in is the fact that I'm in my mid-20s. If any of you have any doubts, please share – or perhaps if others of you have gotten symptoms this early in life.

What's most frustrating is how both this upcoming week and the month of September in general is going to be very active, and I don't want this annoying problem getting in the way like it did this weekend. I've drank plenty of water today, taken a couple Advil, and right now it seems to be tame again, only a slight feeling of stiffness.

I just hope I wake up with it in at least dealable shape tomorrow. I have a lot of walking/standing to do, and I can't sit around another day. =(

    99% certain it is gout.

Like me, my sister's husband has gout, and my nephew got it in his 20's. Sounds like you are genetically programmed for gout, and your diet just brought it on sooner.

Get your uric acid measured and, if necessary reduce it below 6mg/dL

My first attack wasn't until my early 40's but it WAS an attack in the ankle and had me on crutches. But the attack lasted exactly 3 days and disappeared as mysteriously as it had arisen with no lasting consequences.

Advil is pretty decent but make sure you take it in a therapeutic dose of at least 400 mg, 4 times a day.

When the attack subsides, wait a week and have your uric acid tested.
