    Hi,
    I’ve just joined the group and thought I should introduce myself and list some of the things I have gone through with gout and see if there is anything I am missing (maybe even help some one?).

    Anyways – I turn 41 tomorrow and was first given the gout news from my Doctor in England when I was 20.

    In England at the time, the only thing that seemed to be available was Ibuprophen – which although works makes my stomach and bowels go through hell (thank god for pepto!).

    diclofenac also works but with the stomach side effects.

    Allipurinol is great but I don’t find the idea of 1 x 300mg a day for the rest of my life good either (I did that for 3 years in England and stopped after I learned of a link to kidney stones).

    So, since coming to the USA 2.5 years ago (and with no medical coverage) I have to use Alieve (again – nasty stomach symptoms, thank god for pepto).

    My triggers over the years have changed (what seems good one month is bad the next) but my ‘favorites’ are Bread (anything except bleached) Beer, Milk and Soy.

    I suffer with pain (during an attack) at any part of my body (fingers, chest (the ‘gristle in the front of the chest), arms (joints), knees, ankles and toes).

    I drink lots of water (daily about 2 litres) and have found that Black Cherries, Blackberries and other dark skinned fruit to be very helpful.

    Anyways – that’s pretty much it – do you think I am missing anything?

    Did you ever try Colchicine?

    Drinking 2 litres of water is good but I do not think it is a lot for Gouties. Incresing it further by 1-2 Ltrs may help more( provided there is no medical condition that pervents you from taking more water).

    Other item mentioned on this site is BBB, which seems to have worked for majority of the Gouties, though I have never tried it.

    Hi,
    yes I did (during a brief spell when I had insurance) it did not work the time I tried (emptied the whole bottle). I had a repeat prescription but did not refill.
    I’ve always found beans (especially baked beans), pulses and soy to go against me to be honest!

    Don't be too hasty over the BBB, Darren!

    The beans are left out of the equation proper- it's the stuff out of the skins that does it! The protein is the insides and is not helpful to take in!

    Just drink the liquid remains, if you try it.

    Although it may be expensive- if you have gout, you need to know your SUA number before  anything can squarely be said about how to go forward.

    On a broader note- all the things you (and I) like are usually bad for us- and particularly gout.

    I would say you need to consider that aspect more- Diet is not a simple issue , nor easy to follow well.  All your likes are on my treats list!

    Otherwise, in the long term, 'meds' will be the only option.

    Darren, I hate to be harsh to a newcomer, but you need to wake up!

    If you have had gout since your twenties, you have a serious medical condition that will not be fixed by pissing about with diet.

    The allopurinol risk for kidney stones is lower than the risk without allopurinol, and is no risk at all with adequate hydration and alkaline urine (best practice for all gout sufferers).

    If you were half-blind, would you stop wearing glasses because of a myth that it might lower your chances with the ladies? (seriously not true!Wink)

    You've got 20 years of urate buildup that will cripple you in your 50's or 60's unless you get your uric acid levels under control.

    Please get back on the allopurinol and get your uric acid sorted.
