After finally finding a GP who seemed to know what they are talking about I am about to recommence my re -introduction to allopurinol early next week.

I have two week at 100mg allop with two colchicine for two weeks, followed by

2 weeks @ 200mg with two colchicine for two weeks. Then..

A blood test to determine my uric acid levels, and 300mg allo from thereonin.

Should I take the colchicine before, after, with, before and after ??????? the allopurinol?

Last time the GP gave me 100gm allopurinol for the first time without even telling me I was on an introductory dose, or without describing any sort of paln to lead to 300mg. I then continued drinking alcohol ( I had been experiencing mild attacks previously) thinking that all was OK and that the allopurinol would sort everything out until I experienced gout armageddon for 10 days in my ankle and toe that I have only just recovered from.

I'm recommencing the allop next week and will not be drinking alchohol until I'm convinced that I'm taking 300mg wthout any effects for a good period of time. Any advice on how best to time the colchicine around the allopurinol would be very welcome.

It does not matter what time of day you take allopurinol.

Neither does it matter what time you take colchicine, except that you might suffer adverse stomach related events, so it is probably unwise to take it just before you leave the house.

It sounds like a good plan Peter.  I would add is to take both drugs AFTER a meal rather than on awakening with an empty stomach.

Taking the 100 mg. for two more weeks seems unnecessary to me because it is usually done just to see if one is intolerant to allopurinol (NOBODY gets enough benefit to stay at this dose) but you have ALREADY taken this dosage. But your doctor is the one with the Rx pad.

For the next month,  until you have your allopurinol at 300 mg. eliminate organ meats, broths and gravies, eliminate fish, limit meat. Try to get most of your protein your protein from milk and eggs. Drink lots  of water.

I am on 100mg Allopurinol and it has been very effective for me. My levels dropped from 7.5 down to 5 and after three months of initial flare ups I have now been gout free for six months (which is a blessing indeed, as I had been getting continual attacks before the drug).

The consultant was surprised at the affect it had had in reducing my numbers, but said it does happen…Good luck Peter!
