Something to keep in mind – during (and immediately after) an acute attack, your uric acid level will drop.? I'm not sure I understand the reasoning, but it's entirely possible that your level of 6.6 mg/dL will continue to climb over the next few months, until it gets to a point that triggers another attack.

If the doc isn't prepared to prescribe meds at this point, I'd ask for a follow-up blood-test in 3 months to see where your SUA level is at.

Lesson learned: Buy beer in the US.?

$5.99 a 6-pack?? Seriously, at that price, the question becomes 'Can you afford not to drink?'

When it was first suggested to me that I might have gout, I was terribly depressed.? “Why me?” I thought.? I'm only 36, and I'm in pretty good shape after all.? But after a while, I came to terms with the possibility that it might indeed be gout, and if so, well, there were some much worse things I might have been afflicted with – cancer, diabetes, leprosy, etc, etc…

I went for the uric acid test, and misinterpreted the results such that it appeared that what I was suffering from was not, in fact, gout.? (Long story short – I was interpreting my test results using the wrong scale, and it took a few of the more experienced gouties here to clue in.? Turns out it was gout after all.)

Strangely, when it was first represented to me that it might not be gout that I was suffering from, I was a bit put out.? I know it sounds weird, but I had come to terms with the fact that gout was going to be a part of who I was.? To suddenly be 'out of the club' almost felt like I was being denied.? (To say nothing of the now inexplicable flare-ups I continued to suffer from.? A scary and painful mystery – if it wasn't gout, what the hell was it?!?)

Well, it was gout.? And when it was finally diagnosed, I felt much better – much more in control.? Now that I knew what I was dealing with, I could address it.? Knowledge is power.

So, the emotional aspect of gout?? For me it was something of a roller-coaster.? But it turned out alright in the end.? I hope hearing about my own experience can help you with yours.? Good luck, and keep your chin up!

It occurs to me that, since there is no serious money to be made in gout treatment, there is conversely little serious medical attention devoted to it.

Ravenwood, I hope this lengthy, detailed explanation is of help to you.?

Thank you hans.? It does, somewhat.? I'm expecting either 2 or 3 in terms of a reaction.? He'll either agree to increase the dose (#3), or he'll express some reservations (#2).? If the latter, I'm just trying to be certain I can produce an intelligent explanation for why my 6.8 should not be considered 'normal', even though the lab is saying that it is.

So in layman's terms, I would be accurate in telling the doctor, “6.8 might be fine for someone who does not already have gout, but since I do, it's still high enough a concentration for me to be developing urate crystals.? Therefore, write me the bloody script, damn yer eyes.? Please and thank you.” ??

My last, however, was a 9 day killer that had me bedridden in immense pain. I stopped that attack completely?in a day with a massive dose of colchicine (22 little buggers.)? Next day I was perfectly well except for the feeling that I had had an enema with a firehose.

Lol – I'm beginning to really enjoy this forum!? It's not only a great source of information from people who share the same condition, but the personalities here are great too.
